TAKE ACTION: Join Business, Faith Leaders to Call for Indoor Gatherings and to Safely Reopen the Economy

Silicon Valley Chamber Coalition & South Bay Pastors Network Action Center

Many businesses have sat idle for the last seven-plus months and are on the brink of extinction because Santa Clara County officials have not created an environment or pathway where businesses can safely reopen and have a fighting chance to survive.

COVID-19 Federal Paid Leaves Explained

By CalChamber – March 21, 2020

The federal government passed a coronavirus emergency relief package on March 18 that provides protected paid leave to workers impacted by COVID-19. Below is information employers should know about the new Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act, and Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act.

Criteria

The Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act, and Emergency Family and Medical Leave Expansion Act are temporary measures that will take effect on April 2 and will sunset on December 31, 2020. The measures apply to employers with fewer than 500 employees–employers with more than 500 employers are not covered, Ebbink, partner at Fisher Phillips law firm, explains.

Medical test results are not needed to qualify for either leave, but each leave has different criteria.

CalChamber Identifies Two Bills as Job Killers

In an effort to keep our members updated on issues that could affect their business, we wanted to share this article from the CalChamber.

The California Chamber of Commerce named two recently introduced bills as 2020 job killers.

The bills are very similar to prior versions also identified as job killers and stopped in the legislative process given the significant policy concerns raised.

• SB 850 (Leyva; D-Chino) is a mandated scheduling requirement. It eliminates worker flexibility and exposes employers to costly penalties, litigation, and government enforcement, by mandating employers in the retail, grocery, or restaurant industry, including employers who have hybrid operations that include a retail or restaurant section, to provide a 21-day work schedule and then face penalties and litigation if the employer changes the schedule with less than 7 days notice.

New 2020 Labor Laws Affecting California Employers

Many newly signed laws will affect California employers, most beginning January 1, 2020. Some bills made significant changes to California employment law, while others made small but important changes of which employers must be aware.

2020 California labor laws

New labor laws have been passed in recruiting and hiring; discrimination, harassment and retaliation protections; leaves of absence and benefits; workplace safety; arbitration; privacy; and wage and hourly pay.

The list of labor laws is long so we’ve included a downloadable comprehensive document provided by the CalChamber with need-to-know details. One of the main changes was the extension of harassment training for supervisors and employees for all businesses with five or more employees. This was initially to done completed by all businesses by January 2020 but has been extended by one year to January 1, 2021.

To read the complete list of new and updated bills that may affect you as a business owner, download the PDF document below.

SB-1343 Respect in the Workplace Training

According to the new law designated SB-1343, by January 1, 2020, 92% of the state’s workforce [roughly 15.5 million workers] will need to have received at least one hour of sexual harassment training for non-management employees; and two hours of training for supervisors. Following the 2020 deadline, these educational thresholds will need to be met again every two years.

Monthly Respect in the Workplace SB-1343 Trainings

As a service to the community, the Campbell Chamber has scheduled monthly trainings held four times between 9am and 4:30pm that we are making available to member and non-member businesses so they can more easily meet this new requirement. The one-hour employee training is $25 per person and the two-hour supervisor training is $45/person.

Respect in the Workplace SB-1343 training
Click any of the links below to learn more or to sign up for one of these training sessions.

The dates of these monthly Respect In The Workplace trainings are:

Here are 7 things HR and compliance professionals need to know about this mandate.

  1. What does SB-1343 change?

California law has required employers having 50 or more employees to provide at least 2 hours of sexual harassment training to supervisors every two years since 2005. SB-1343 instead changes this by requiring employers that employ five or more employees [including temporary or seasonal employees] to provide at least one hour of sexual harassment training to all non-management employees and 2 hours of sexual harassment training to all supervisory employees by January 1, 2020, and once every two years thereafter.
